Laboratory records, 1971-1985.

The collection documents the research activities of UCSD faculty and students in the area of human fibrinogen and the structure of proteins generally. The Newat database series contains correspondence from researchers around the world, journal articles, and summary data reports pertaining to identification of certain protein sequences. The series of laboratory notebooks includes the notebooks of several researchers who contributed to the structural analysis of the human fibrinogen molecule. Some of the notebooks contain charts of amino acid analysis and high performance liquid chromotography. The collection also includes the peptide sequencer used by Doolittle's staff in their investigations. The sequencer, only the second example of its kind, was modeled on the instrument designed and constructed by Nobel laureate Bruce Merrifield.

Dr. Russell F. Doolittle has been a professor of chemistry at UCSD since 1962. He is the director of a laboratory that has conducted substantial investigations into the evolutionary and structural aspects of proteins. In 1979, Doolittle's laboratory successfully identified the structure of the amino acid sequence for the human fibrinogen molecule. In conjunction with this work, Doolittle created Newat, a database of known protein sequences against which other protein sequences could be compared ...
